Stephan Baker Photography Newsletter

Hi

It's that time of the year when thoughts turn to school and kids learning new things. Every school year is a milestone and deserves some photographic attention, especially in the first few years when everything is new and exciting. These are the years when memories are made and the things that seem so everyday are things that we cherish in a photograph years later.

So bring those cameras out and take the pictures of the first few days of school and then as school goes along and you have the opportunity to go into the classroom, take your camera there as well. As an aside it is always a good thing to ask the teacher if taking pictures in the classroom and school is ok.

Showing Your Child the Fun of Photography

So far we have been talking about using your camera to record your children's events but now a new thought, depending on your camera, teach them how to take some pictures.

I have early memories of being allowed to take photos and that was one thing that caused an interest in photography for me. Something that is more important than the camera is the photographer's ability to "see" things differently.

A really neat project that I do with kids and cameras to teach this concept is to have them go around an area and look for the letters of the alphabet. They are not looking for the obvious printed letter, but for things that form the letters, like the "a frame" of an art easel, or and "x" formed by the cross pieces of an electrical tower. S ShapeThis exercise turns into a real treasure hunt and the kids have a great time and are learning as well.

When you are finished and have all the letters of the alphabet you can put those into a book form (a great Christmas present for someone) and have them as a memory of your child's learning. This is a great exercise for younger kids just learning the alphabet as well as the older ones.

I did this with a group of ten to twelve year olds and when they were finished they wanted to do the numbers from one to ten!

So get out and have fun with you camera and your children.
